What Causes Your Furnace to Shut Down?

Furnace shutdowns or malfunctions can be caused by a variety of factors. Understanding the common reasons behind furnace shutdowns is key to preventing them and ensuring uninterrupted heating in your home.

  • Airflow Restrictions – Proper airflow is crucial for efficient heating performance. Clogged/dirty air filters, closed vents, or a dirty blower wheel can restrict the flow of air. A decrease in airflow can lead to overheating furnace components triggering safety mechanisms that cause the system to shut down to prevent damage. Maintaining optimal airflow by regularly changing filters, keeping vents open, and cleaning the blower wheel will prevent your system from shutting down.
  • Faulty Thermostat – Several thermostat-related issues could be the root cause of furnace problems and shutdowns. Selecting incorrect settings, miscalibration, or a faulty connection to the system could all contribute to malfunctions in the furnace. It’s essential to inspect the thermostat to determine whether it’s a simple settings issue that can be easily fixed or a more complex problem that requires the expertise of a technician.
  • Dirty Flame Sensor – Sometimes a furnace keeps shutting off because the flame sensor is corroded or covered in soot. When operating correctly, the flame sensor detects flames and turns off the gas valve when there isn’t a flame to prevent your home from filling up with harmful fumes. Normally, the flame sensor works as intended, but when it is soot-covered, it becomes unable to sense a flame at all – even if the furnace is on. Therefore, it shuts off the gas valve, and without gas, there will be no heat in your home. This is a repair that needs to be handled by a professional HVAC technician.
  • Oversized Furnace – When it comes to heating and cooling equipment, larger isn’t always better. A larger system warms up your home too quickly, causing unpleasant temperature changes and short-circuiting. Short-circuiting and an inconsistent furnace cycle will cause inefficiencies and put strain on the system as a whole which will shorten the lifespan of the unit. The only way to fix this issue is to get a new, properly sized-furnace.

Troubleshooting

Want to fix it yourself? Try these tips:

Need a hand assessing your current furnace issues? If your furnace isn’t blowing hot air, is making a strange noise, or your furnace won’t turn on, try these steps:

Check that the thermostat is in the “heat” position

It seems simple, but it is always good to check your thermostat is set to the correct setting (and you’d be surprised how many times this is the culprit!).

Check the furnace’s circuit breaker

Go to your breaker box, and make sure the heating circuit panel has not switched to “OFF”. If so, switch it back to “ON” and try your furnace again. If your furnace turns back on, wait a few minutes and go check the breaker box again. If the circuit has tripped, call the heating experts at Calfo right away.

Change your filter

Due to Pittsburgh’s harsh winters, a filthy furnace filter can quickly block airflow, which can eventually cause your furnace to overheat and shut down. Calfo can also help you determine if and when it is time to replace your furnace’s dirty filter, to keep your air clean and your furnace running efficiently.

Unblock and open any supply vents

A common home-heating misconception is that closing the unused air vents in a home can save energy. Open all of the vents in your home to allow even pressure throughout your ductwork. You may also want to try unclogging your furnace condensate line, by attaching a shop vac or industrial vacuum to the end of the condensate drain (white PVC pipe) on the outside of your house.

They are my go to company…

Just relocated to Pittsburgh from California and during this cold weather snap our furnace stopped working. Called CALFO and Jason, the field service tech arrived and diagnosed the problem immediately. We had to replace blower motor and got the furnace up and running perfectly. Prompt, diligent and very professional service. They are my go to company now.
