What Causes Your AC to Shut Down?

AC shutdowns or malfunctions can be caused by a multitude of factors. Understanding the common reasons behind AC shutdowns is key to preventing them and ensuring uninterrupted cooling in your home.

  • Thermostat Issues – Several thermostat-related issues could be the root cause of AC problems and shutdowns. Selecting incorrect settings, miscalibration, or a faulty connection to the system could all contribute to malfunctions in the AC. It’s essential to inspect the thermostat to determine whether it’s a simple settings issue that can be easily fixed or a more complex problem that requires the expertise of a technician.
  • Airflow Restrictions – Proper airflow is crucial for efficient cooling performance. Clogged/dirty air filters, closed vents, and obstructions surrounding the outdoor unit can restrict the flow of air. A decrease in airflow can lead to overheating AC components triggering safety mechanisms that cause the system to shut down to prevent damage. Maintaining optimal airflow by regularly changing filters, keeping vents open, and keeping the outdoor unit clear will prevent your system from shutting down.
  • Compressor Concerns – The compressor is one of the most integral components of the AC unit and is responsible for pumping refrigerant through the system so it can change state. If the compressor stops working, your AC will as well. If your AC struggles to start up or if you hear irregular noises or vibrations, there is probably an issue with your compressor, and you should contact a professional HVAC technician.
  • Refrigerant Imbalances – Refrigerant is the substance that cools the air within your cooling system. Low refrigerant levels due to leaks that occur over time can reduce the efficiency of your system and cause the compressor to shut down to prevent damage. Addressing refrigerant imbalances, repairing leaks, and maintaining appropriate refrigerant levels can prevent shutdowns and ensure that your system is performing optimally.
  • Condensate Drain Problems – The condensate pan collects the water moisture that collects on the evaporator coil during the cooling process. A clogged drain or broken pump can cause the water to overflow in the pan, tripping the limit switch and shutting down the AC.  The drain will need to be cleaned or the pump will need to be replaced by a technician to get the AC back up and running.

Troubleshooting

Want to fix it yourself? Try these tips:

  • Ensure your thermostat is in the “Cool” position and set to “Auto”, not “On”.
  • Check the AC’s circuit breaker and see if it has been switched to “OFF”. If so, switch that sucker back to “ON”.
  • Make sure the outdoor “disconnect switch” on your outdoor unit is in the “ON” position. (The disconnect switch is usually a small metal grey box mounted on a wall near the AC’s outdoor unit)
  • Change your filter if it’s dirty. A dirty filter blocks airflow to the AC, which can eventually cause the AC to shut down and will cost you in inefficiency.
  • Do not leave any AC vents closed—unblock and open any supply vents (the metal grates where the conditioned air comes out).
