Thinking of improving your home this year? If a heating, cooling, or home performance upgrade is on the horizon for your house, you will want to be armed with all the relevant rebate and incentive information before starting your project. Here is what you need to know about the HVAC rebates Pennsylvania offers, as well as other incentives like electrification rebates and tax savings available for heat pumps.
Pennsylvania Energy Rebates
Heat pump rebates for homeowners were part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which put $370 billion towards clean energy and reducing energy consumption across the nation. Some of these rebates will be disseminated at the state level, but the details of how that will work are to be determined. What we do know is that there are thousands of dollars available to Pittsburgh homeowners for the following:
- Insulation
- Air sealing
- Heat pump/HVAC upgrades
- And more
Savings can be up to $4,000, but must include energy modeling that shows a 35% reduction in energy use. There are also rebates for up to $2,000 with a 20%-34% reduction in energy use. Income-qualified homes are eligible for $8,000 in rebates!
Federal Tax Credits
The Inflation Reduction Act also incentivizes residential efficiency and electrification with tax savings. The 25C tax credit offers a deduction on your federal income taxes equal to 30% of the cost of energy-efficient upgrades like:
- Insulation and air sealing ($1,200 annual max, materials only)
- Energy audits ($150 max)
- Energy-efficient heating and cooling systems including furnaces, boilers, and central AC ($600 annual max)
- Electrical panel upgrades ($600 annual max)
- Exterior windows and doors ($500 annual max for doors, $600 annual max for windows, materials only)
- Heat pumps and heat pump hot water heaters ($2,000 annual max)
This tax credit has been upgraded from 10% to 30% as of 2023, and is set to expire in 2032.
